Storage and Cooking

Oysters can be eaten raw; to serve, place shucked half shell oysters on cracked ice to serve.

Oysters can be steamed open by placing them in a pierced steamer over boiling water until the shells open. They can be roasted on the grill until they open.

Oysters can be cooked in a conventional oven or microwave until heated thoroughly. For plump, tender oysters; cook only until edges begin to curl.

Oysters can be fried in a batter made from flour, eggs, breading and a number of complimentary seasonings.

Oysters can also be eaten in a stew.

Virginia Seafood
Virginia Seafood and summer are a great combination. Many Virginians know summertime for their family gatherings highlighted by steamed Blue Crabs, but there are other ways to enjoy Virginia Seafood during the summer. As we get closer to the official start of summer it’s a great time to be on the look out for the wide variety of seafood festivals and events held in Virginia. We’d also like to highlight Virginia’s Commercial Watermen and women who provide us with fresh and local Virginia Seafood not only in the summer, but year-round as well. For more information on festivals and events in your area go to our websites Virginiaseafood.org and Virginiaoysters.org. ... See MoreSee Less
